Feb 2007 - The Hindu : Karnataka / Bangalore News : That drop is more precious than you realise

The Hindu : Karnataka / Bangalore News : That drop is more precious than you realise: "
'There is no future for Bangalore unless we reduce our dependency on water from the Cauvery. We must realise that the Cauvery has its own limitations.' This grim warning comes not from any environmentalist but from N.C. Muniyappa, Chairman of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board.Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Muniyappa said people in the city have 'not been pushed to corner' yet and so have not taken to water conservation seriously. 'Unlike in Chennai where the groundwater is brackish, Bangalore's groundwater is still good. So many people still depend on groundwater for their needs.'Bangalore requirement is about 1,400 million litres a day (MLD). While its one lakh-odd borewells supply about 560 MLD (40 per cent), the BWSSB supplies 910 MLD, sourced from the Cauvery and the Arkavathy.

Solution to water crisis lies in roof top rain water harvesting. When there is excess rainfall, it can be diverted to ground water recharge. Analysis showed that Bangalore has AAR of 859 mm with 60 rainy days. Also probability of getting 500mm rainfall is 97% i.t alomost 100% chance. I think rain harvested water is sufficient to meet family demand for daily household activities like cleaning, bathing, sewage etc. This will reduce the dependancy on freshwater storage which can be used in non-rainy days like winter and summer.Government should make the rules strict and make it mandatory to adopt rainwater harvesting system for all household, apartments and big organisations. They should not provide the water connection untill house/premise has water harvesting system. Secondly wastage/loss of water in house or in conveyance should be avoided as much as possible. It is rightly said" Water saved is Water Produced"

Rigtly said, more details of potential water resources and Rainfall data is resented in new posts.
